Hola,

I’m Jano Garcia. I help forward-thinking remote companies design and build products that perform and scale.

As a “T-shaped” Product Designer with a technical background — Design Engineering and Design Systems — and business experience, I bring a comprehensive, end-to-end vision to the design process.

It’s about form, function, and strategy. I focus on creating intuitive, useful products that simplify people’s lives and, in turn, help businesses thrive.

I strive to bring clarity to ambiguity, uncertainty, and complexity by following these guiding principles:

  • Thinking strategically
  • Leveraging first-principles and systems thinking
  • Acting pragmatically

I believe better products and systems emerge when you understand how they work from top to bottom. This allows you to blend interface ideas with technical possibilities and business priorities — working at the intersection of design, engineering, and strategy.

I’m based in Spain, in a town bordering France, where I live with my partner and our two kids. In my spare time, I explore my creative interests — photography and music — and continue to satisfy my appetite for learning and growth.

Thanks for stopping by.

Skills

When you think about a product, “how it looks” and “how it works” are inseparable — both are fundamental to shaping the user experience.

This interplay has always drawn me to the intersection of design and technology, where utility meets delight — and where user experience and business strategy converge to create value for both.

Some might describe this as “T-shaped” skills, but for me, it’s simply genuine curiosity.

Design

Simple things should be simple, complex things should be possible.

Alan Kay

As noted earlier, I care about designing intuitive, useful products that simplify people’s lives — and, in turn, drive business success.

For me, this means focusing on:

  • Simplicity with depth — Streamlined, meaningful products that are intuitive, reliable, and performant — simplicity doesn’t have to lack depth or power.
  • Form and function — How it works and how effectively a product solves a specific problem, not just how it looks.
  • Performance and impact — Products that meet both user needs and business goals, ensuring functionality and value.

My design expertise spans Product Design, UI Design, and Design Systems, guided by these core principles:

  • Strategic thinking – “Doing the right things” before “doing things right”. Transforming a vague idea into a solid product isn’t straightforward; it involves navigating the complexities and uncertainties of the demand side of products, not just the delivery side.
  • First-principles thinking — Applying fundamental principles at every level, from the big picture to the details.
  • Systems thinking – Building well-architected systems for cohesive and scalable products.
  • Pragmatic action – Making decisions and necessary trade-offs within real-world constraints.

Engineering

Code is the ultimate medium for prototyping, shaping, and crafting interfaces and interactions for digital products, as well as architecting scalable design systems.

As a Product Designer skilled in Front-end Development, I help shape digital products by contributing to the implementation of:

  • Front-end frameworks and coding guidelines.
  • Design systems and component libraries.
  • Static and dynamic sites.
  • Email systems.

That is, my development expertise aligns more with roles like Design Engineer, UX Engineer, or Design Systems Engineer — or whatever it happens to be called today.

This means I can bring designs to life using web technologies such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, SVG, and PHP.

I focus on creating highly responsive, accessible user interfaces, ensuring they are robust from both user experience and technical standpoints — addressing usability, performance, security, maintainability, and scalability.

I also have prior experience implementing simple back-end applications — involving MVC frameworks, database design, message queues, asynchronous workers, and caching.

While that’s no longer my focus, I leverage this experience to design feasible solutions and collaborate effectively with peers. This includes:

  • Align design and engineering — Improve workflows and align goals by fluently navigating and speaking the language of both fields.
  • Apply a holistic perspective — An end-to-end understanding of the product design and delivery process, considering critical elements such as the problem domain, technical feasibility, viability, and impact to guide informed decision-making.

Continuous Learning

If there’s one common thread in everything I do, it’s my curiosity and determination to learn, understand, and create — whether in design, code, business, or other creative interests.

For me, continuous learning isn’t just about knowledge acquisition. It’s an attitude to consistently challenge your thoughts, expand your views, and master your craft — a journey ultimately leading you to your best self.

Since graduating — Electronic Engineering BEng — I have consistently invested in high-quality resources to further develop my expertise at the intersection of business, design, and technology, while also pursuing other personal interests.

Of the resources I’ve recently completed, these stood out as particularly valuable:

Learning is never done, sure. Yet, with unlimited access to information, a constant stream of “newness,” and the pressure to keep up, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed.

That’s why I take a lifelong, sustainable, and intentional approach to learning.

I focus on curated, high signal-to-noise ratio resources, doubling down on core principles and timeless knowledge while minimizing exposure to high-churn, volatile content.

Mentoring

Helping others grow has always been deeply rewarding. I’ve had the opportunity to mentor team members across experience levels — from new hires to senior roles — supporting their growth while strengthening the team as a whole.

Mentorship creates stronger, more cohesive teams by breaking down knowledge silos, building shared understanding, and improving workflows.

My mentoring experience includes product design, design systems, accessibility, front-end development, and beyond.

Mentoring is not just about sharing knowledge; it’s also an opportunity to learn and refine my skills. Overall, a highly rewarding experience that aligns with my passion for education, as demonstrated by my involvement in the Sube al Globo (Spanish) side project.

Exploration

Design is compression. Art is expansion.

Ben Barry

That perfectly sums up why I love exploring creativity beyond work.

It’s an opportunity to recharge, have fun, and develop broader thinking and problem-solving skills — ultimately making us better creators.

Photography

Photography has been a long-standing passion of mine, dating back to the analog era.

What I appreciate most about photography is the immediate sense of presence it brings, demanding complete focus and creativity. Those are precious, intense moments.

I like to observe carefully and find beauty in the mundane. Feeling most drawn to portraying people and their environments through simple, direct photography, where light, color, composition, and expression play the most important roles in setting the mood and telling a story.

I feel most inspired by the work of classical painters, creative documentary photographers, and cinematographers for their storytelling abilities — depicting raw emotions and authentic moments — and for their masterful use of light, color, and composition.

Started out with analog photography — shooting 35mm and 6x7 medium format film, hand-processing it and making prints in a darkroom — later adopting a hybrid workflow of film scanning and digital processing, and eventually transitioning to a complete digital workflow.

The aesthetics of analog film and its non-linear characteristics continue to inspire my choice of gear, tools, and workflows. I favor those that allow for a more “filmic” approach, which drives me to explore the work of brilliant color scientists behind fine imaging mediums — such as film emulsions, fine-art print processes, and image processing for digital cinema cameras.

Music

Making music is one of the most freeing, challenging, and rewarding creative activities I have engaged in.

It’s a great way to step away from the daily routine, keeping things creative and stimulating — even if it’s just for a quick break. I find the process of layering instruments and arranging them into a cohesive piece both intriguing and mesmerizing. I also enjoy exploring sound design — for music, soundscapes, or UI.

Rather than mastering any particular instrument, I’m more interested in the musical piece as a whole — the interplay between instruments, the harmony and rhythm, the arrangement, and the emotions evoked. This curiosity drives me to experiment with various instruments.

I use a combination of software instruments and analog hardware — synthesizers like the Roland Juno 60 and Elektron Analog Four, electric guitar, and bass.

I appreciate electronic instruments — such as synths and samplers — for their limitless sound-sculpting possibilities and more traditional ones for their tangible and expressive qualities.

With limited spare time, I optimize my workflow for short sessions, focusing on tools and techniques that can provide an immersive, inspiring, and smooth creative process.

Given the vastness of this creative field, I approach it as a lifelong learning experience. A journey.
